NADH oxidase and fumarate reductase of Ancylostoma ceylanicum.

Ancylostoma ceylanicum, the hookworm parasite of cat, dog and man, was found to contain NADH and/or NADPH oxidase as well as fumarate reductase activities. Both the enzyme systems were predominantly located in the membranes of mitochondrial-rich preparations. The membranes also exhibited the presence of a reduced pyridine nucleotide transhydrogenase activity which transferred hydrogen from NADPH to NAD. Amongst respiratory inhibitors, rotenone (Site I inhibitor) markedly depressed both NADH oxidase and fumarate reductase while others, namely antimycin-A, KCN and azide, had a lesser effect.

Crocodilian Nest in a Late Cretaceous Sauropod Hatchery from the Type Lameta Ghat Locality,Jabalpur, India

The well-known Late Cretaceous Lameta Ghat locality (Jabalpur, India) provides a window of opportunity to study a large stable, near shore sandy beach, which was widely used by sauropod dinosaurs as a hatchery. In this paper, we revisit the eggs and eggshell fragments previously assigned to lizards from this locality and reassign them to crocodylomorphs. Several features point to a crocodilian affinity, including a subspherical to ellipsoidal shape, smooth, uneven external surface, discrete trapezoid shaped shell units with wide top and narrow base, basal knobs and wedge shaped crystallites showing typical inverted triangular extinction under crossed nicols. The crocodylomorph eggshell material presented in this paper adds to the skeletal data of these most probably Cretaceous-Eocene dryosaurid crocodiles.     

Plant regeneration of Mangifera indica using liquid shaker culture to reduce phenolic exudation

The exudation of phenolics from the cut ends of mango explants greatly hinders their regenerative ability in any in vitro growth medium. However, pretreatment of explants using liquid shaker culture helps in overcoming this problem. Explants kept in liquid MS medium supplemented with 1% polyvinylpyrolidone in 250 ml conical flasks on an automated shaker at 75 rpm were able to produce shoots when inoculated on gelled MS medium supplemented with different concentrations of growth regulators.Abbreviations BA benzyladenine - IAA indoleacetic acid - NAA naphthaleneacetic acid - IBA indolebutyric acid     

Field response of mycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizal Medicago sativa var. local in the F1 generation

Seeds were collected from plants of Medicago sativa var. local inoculated with Glomus macrocarpum and G. fasciculatum separately in pot experiments. These seeds were sown in garden soil and the percentage germination, general health and yield of subsequent plants (the F1 generation) were studied. The percentage germination was highest in seeds of G. macrocarpum-inoculated parents followed by those inoculated with G. fasciculatum; seeds of uninoculated parent plants showed the lowest germination. Vegetative yield of the progeny decreased in the order of plants inoculated with G. fasciculatum, with G. macrocarpum, and uninoculated. On the other hand, reproductive yield was highest for plants whose parents were inoculated with G. macrocarpum, followed by G. fascicullatum, and lowest for seeds of uninoculated parent plants.     

The Effects of Alpha (10-Hz) and Beta (22-Hz) “Entrainment” Stimulation on the Alpha and Beta EEG Bands: Individual Differences Are Critical to Prediction of Effects

Two different groups of normal college students were formed: One (the alpha group) received 10-Hz audiovisual (AV) stimulation for 8 minutes, and the other (beta) group received 22-Hz AV stimulation for 8 minutes. EEG power in the alpha (8-13 Hz) and beta (13-30 Hz) bands was FFT-extracted before, during, and for 24 minutes after stimulation. It was found that baseline (prestimulation) alpha and beta power predict the effects of stimulation, leading to individual differences in responsivity. High-baseline alpha participants showed either no entrainment or relatively prolonged entrainment with alpha stimulation. Low-baseline participants showed transient entrainment. Baseline alpha also predicted the direction of change in alpha with beta stimulation. Baseline beta and alpha predicted beta band response to beta stimulation, which was transient enhancement in some participants, inhibition in others. Some participants showed relatively prolonged beta enhancement with beta stimulation.     

Estimation of Linear Regression Model with Random Coefficients Ensuring Almost Non-Negativity of Variance Estimators

For a linear regression model with random coefficients, this paper considers the estimation of the mean of coefficient vector which, in turn, involves the estimation of variances of random coefficients. The conventional estimation methods for it sometimes provides negative estimates. In order to circumvent this kind of difficulty, a proposal is forwarded and is examined in the light of existing ones.
